The Setting

Inside the Baa Atoll biosphere

Anantara Kihavah combines a protected Baa Atoll setting with polished pool-villa living and one of the Maldives' defining dining experiences beneath the sea.

The island sits within the UNESCO-designated Baa Atoll, an area valued for rich marine life and seasonal encounters around Hanifaru Bay. Transfers are generally by seaplane from Malé, turning the arrival into the first view of the atolls.

Our Take

Who it suits

Kihavah works for travellers who want a private-villa retreat without feeling confined to it. Pair a water villa with a few carefully chosen experiences—underwater dining, a private cruise and Baa Atoll marine time—rather than overfilling the week.

Where To Stay

Pool villas on beach and water

Every villa is designed around private outdoor space and a pool. Overwater villas place the lagoon at the edge of the deck, while beach villas offer larger gardens, direct sand access and a stronger sense of tropical seclusion.

Dining & Experience

SEA below the lagoon

SEA, the underwater restaurant at Anantara Kihavah, with tables set beneath the reef

SEA

Underwater restaurant and wine cellar

A dining room set below the surface and surrounded by the sea, reached through what the resort describes as the world's first underwater wine cellar. International fine dining with a caviar focus. Breakfast on request, lunch and dinner; closed on Fridays.

Dinner is adults-only except on Mondays and Thursdays.

Ask us to request your SEA dinner when the booking is confirmed, not on arrival.

SKY

Rooftop bar with overwater observatory

Rooftop bar with cocktails, tapas and light bites, open from midday to midnight. Beside it is what the resort describes as the Maldives' first overwater observatory, with a telescope the resort calls the most powerful in the Maldives and a resident SKY Guru who leads stargazing sessions.

Sunset drinks and a stargazing session on the same evening.

Stargazing sessions run on a schedule; book through your villa host early in the stay in case of cloud.

FIRE and SPICE

Teppanyaki restaurant and Asian show kitchen in the same overwater complex

FIRE is the teppanyaki restaurant: chefs cook at the counter under a thatched roof, with Japanese and Peruvian dishes. SPICE is the Asian kitchen with tandoori, curries and wok dishes, open-air over the water. Both serve dinner only.

Dinner only, 6.30 pm – 10.00 pm.

Manzaru and the main restaurant

Manzaru serves Mediterranean lunch by the main pool until 5 pm and dinner from 6.30 pm. Breakfast is served 7.30 am – 11.00 am in the main restaurant.

Experiences

The reef first, then everything else

House reef

The house reef is a short swim from the villas. Its Yellow Wall is a vertical section dropping to about 25 metres, though most of the marine life sits shallow enough to see while snorkelling. PADI Discover Scuba and Open Water courses are offered.

Manta rays at Hanifaru Bay

Hanifaru Bay is about 20 minutes by speedboat. In season, plankton gathers in the bay and mantas feed in large numbers; snorkelling only, no diving, under ranger supervision.

SeasonRoughly May to November. Sightings are never guaranteed and the bay closes when conditions require.

Overwater spa

Six treatment pavilions stand over the lagoon. The spa is open 10 am – 8 pm and offers Ayurvedic treatments, yoga and multi-day wellness journeys, with visiting practitioners through the year.

Boats and water sports

Sunset cruises, dolphin-watching trips, half-day big-game fishing and private charter of the resort's 24-metre yacht; kayaks, jet skis and SeaDarts from the water-sports centre. Tennis and a 9-metre climbing wall on land.

Who it works for

Families and couples

Kihavah is a couples' resort that genuinely accommodates children rather than a family resort. The Thiththi Boli Kids' Club takes ages 4–12 (10:00–18:00 daily) with marine-biology course among the activities. Teenagers can use the resort's recreation facilities: recreation area with billiards, life-sized chess, badminton, volleyball, jenga, 9-metre climbing wall. We have not verified a dedicated teen club. Children's amenities are provided in the family villas and babysitting is offered, from three months old. Family villa categories exist on both beach and water. SEA dinner is adults-only except Mondays and Thursdays. This matters if the restaurant is the reason you are choosing the island.

Practical Planning

Good to Know

  • Seaplanes fly in daytime hours only and are weather-dependent. If your international flight lands in Malé after 3.30 pm the resort arranges a domestic flight and speedboat instead, or you may need a night in Malé.
  • Seaplane transfers are arranged by the resort and charged per person; we show the current price in your quote rather than on this page because the resort changes it each January.
  • Overwater villas have steps straight into the lagoon. Families with small children usually prefer a beach villa; the resort does offer a family water-villa category if the water setting matters more.
  • Manta season at Hanifaru Bay runs roughly May to November, which is also the wetter south-west monsoon. Dry, calmer weather is typically December to April, when mantas are far less likely.
  • SEA dinner is adults-only except Mondays and Thursdays. Treat it as a reservation to make at booking time, not on arrival.
  • Rates differ in which meals they include and at which restaurants. Whether a SEA dinner is covered is confirmed on your quote — do not assume it is.
  • The island is quiet in the evenings. Guests looking for a bar scene or entertainment beyond SKY and the restaurants may find it too still.

Map & getting there

Getting there

Fly into Velana International Airport, Malé. Weather-dependent and daytime only. Arranged by the resort once it has your international flight details. The flight to Kihavah takes about 35 minutes. The resort arranges a domestic flight (to Dharavandhoo, Baa Atoll's airport) followed by a speedboat for guests landing after 3.30 pm. Schedules are confirmed by the resort.

Common questions

Before you ask us

How do you reach Anantara Kihavah?
A 35-minute seaplane from Malé in daytime hours, or a domestic flight and speedboat for arrivals after 3.30 pm. The resort arranges the transfer; the cost appears in your quote.
Is Anantara Kihavah suitable for families?
Yes, with limits. There is a kids' club for ages 4–12, family villa categories on beach and water, and children's amenities in the family villas. Teenagers can use the resort's recreation facilities; we have not verified a dedicated teen club. SEA's dinner is adults-only except Mondays and Thursdays.
Can children stay in overwater villas?
The resort publishes a One Bedroom Family Over Water Pool Villa for up to 2 adults and 3 children. Whether a specific villa accepts your party on your dates is confirmed by the live availability check, not by this page.
Does Anantara Kihavah have a house reef?
Yes. The reef is reachable from the shore and the water villas, and the dive centre runs guided snorkelling and PADI courses.
Which villas have pools?
All of them. Every one of the 80 villas and residences has a private pool.
Is SEA included in a meal plan?
It depends on the rate booked. Rates differ in which meals and which restaurants they cover, so we confirm on your quote whether a SEA dinner is included or priced separately.
When is the best time for manta rays in Baa Atoll?
May to November, when plankton gathers in Hanifaru Bay. Encounters are regulated and never guaranteed.
