It has been said that Likuliku Lagoon Resort when viewed from the water, looks just like an ancient Fijian village. Steeped in mythology, legend has it that, circa 1500BC, a convoy of giant outrigger canoes sailed from north of Egypt to the Fijian waters in search of a beautiful land where the Chief’s people could eventually rest after a lifetime of seafaring voyages. It was during this expedition that Likuliku which means “Calm Waters or Lagoon” was fittingly named.
Situated in an area blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, flora, and fauna, the 100% Fijian-owned resort is a tribute to tradition and culture. Drawing inspiration from the island’s beginnings, the free-standing bures is a tapestry of rich cultural textures, artisan craftsmanship, and traditional architectural language. Local materials of vesi timbers, woven magi magi coconut husk, soga palm thatching feature proudly throughout. Menus are fit for epicureans, service is warm and genuine, and romance and intimacy are high on the agenda at the luxurious adult-only Likuliku Lagoon Resort. Who wouldn’t want to rest in this part of the world… and stay forever!
Located not too far from Likuliku Lagoon Resort, 15 minutes by boat to be precise, is a lovely tiny dot of untouched, uninhabited island for guests keen to take exclusivity to a whole new level during their stay. Here, on Mociu Island you can indulge in a sumptuous picnic on the beach, hike to the peak for a breathtaking view or enjoy a guided snorkelling adventure. Just like the beautiful reef in front of Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Mociu Island has also been declared a protected nature reserve, so when you’re swimming or snorkeling around these pristine waters and come across a palm frond on the end of a pole sticking out of the water, it means you have entered a sacred marine reserve or “na-tabu” in the local language. Here, any form of fishing or shell collecting has been outlawed by the late island Chief, so feel free to admire and enjoy but don’t touch or take.
There are 45 bures, and each one whether on land or water, is beautifully finished, the traditional way, there simply is no bad bure here. It’s all about how close to the water you want to be. If it’s overwater living that you’re after, this is the place to be. There is less than a handful of resorts in Fiji that offer overwater bures; Likuliku Lagoon Resort is not only one of these but the first one in the country to set the benchmark and boy did they set the bar high!
Did you know Likuliku Lagoon is a designated turtle breeding ground? Throughout the year there will be evidence of turtle activity so keep an eye out for unhatched eggs, and of course, the magnificent aquatic creatures themselves swimming in the lagoon.
