Nearly 30 years on, this unassuming quiet little achiever of 63 all-beach villas, located in the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, is all grown up now. In September 2020, eight new fabulous one- and two-bedroom Water Retreats complete with slippery slides (which are among the largest of their kind in the world) were added to the original desert island hideaway. Soneva Fushi fans returning to the stunning verdant island will be pleased to hear that the original Soneva dedicated 24/7 butler service, now known as Barefoot Guardians, will be there ready to pack away your shoes (and, if you’re up for the challenge, all your mobile devices too) so you can truly experience the iconic Soneva “No News, No Shoes” and SLOW LIFE! How else were you going to feel the powder soft sand between your toes?
Since its inception in the mid-nineties, Soneva Fushi has been a pioneer of sustainable luxury and still holds this title today. Luxury, for Sonu and Eva – the founders of the Soneva brand – is not simply about shiny fittings and beautiful furnishings (although there is plenty of that), it is more importantly about being sustainable, local, organic, wholesome, learning, fun, and inspiring, all of which is at the heart and soul of the brand’s DNA. Just about everything is recycled, repurposed, and responsibly driven to reduce its own carbon footprint – the island houses a recycling centre, a marine conservation program, an organic vegetable garden, a solar power-plant, a plastic-free philosophy, as well as a glass-blowing studio using its own recycled glass waste to create the resort’s tableware, glass art and bottle their own filtered water.
Several years ago, the resort launched its mosquito project – to stop spraying chemical insecticide and adopt an alternate environmentally friendly approach. As of late 2021, without any chemical fogging, Soneva Fushi has managed to become 98% mosquito-free. For a resort and island, well-known and blessed for its rich, jungle-like vegetation, this was by no means, a small feat. Now, not only have the mosquito population almost gone, delicate dragonflies have found their way back. But the big plus? Not having to don sticky mosquito repellent on a remote tropical island – is quite simply, a luxury.
Gourmet dining reaches new heights (literally)! Zipline through 650 ft (200m) of jungle foliage to reach your stilted dining tower 40 feet above sea level for a must-do bucket-list experience!
